Treyvon Martin: Part of the Problem or Solution?

Q: What are your thoughts on the Treyvon Martin case and the controversy that it has sparked?

Well, let me start off by saying that I feel extremely sorry for his family and friends. No matter what the circumstances were, no one deserves to die like that. Especially at that age. I can only imagine the pain I would feel if I lost my sister right now and she is the same age as Treyvon. I haven't done extensive research on the subject but I know enough to answer this question thoroughly.

First, I really hope that this Zimmermann guys does get put in prison soon. Plain and simple: if Treyvon did not attack this man with a weapon, he had absolutely no reason to shoot him. Also, I really want to know why this man has not been prosecuted yet. It's not like he's denied shooting the boy...or has he? Last time I checked murder was a crime so why this man is still walking free is something I just can not seem to understand.

On another note, I want to address the surge of supporters. First I want to ask...do you all really think this is the only incident like this to happen? In all reality, things like this happen every single day all over America and I want to know why the news has to make it a national scandal for anyone to give the issue attention and stand up against it. Better question is how many of you will care once the news stops caring? Time and time again you see that once something is in the media as a big deal, all of a sudden everyone is so concerned but, once the news dies down, so does everyone's concern and fight! I say if you feel as strongly about this as you say you do when you post up pics of you in your hoodie, please continue the fight for justice even after the news gets tired of hearing about Treyvon!

Also, I want everyone to ask themselves if they are really part of the solution or...part of the problem. It's obvious that this issue is centered around racism. No questions there. But I want African-Americans to realize that sometimes racism goes both ways...even when you don't realize it. Would you care so much about Treyvon if he wasn't black? Would you care if Zimmermann was black? Honestly? Or think about this: How many of you have said someone is "acting white" in a demeaning way? Or how many of you have made a joke about Asians and how they look, sound or act? Even closer to home, how many of you have called someone a "nigga" or "nigger" (which has no difference no matter how you try to argue it) and then had a fit when you heard a white person say it? Think about it! If you want to go even further, think about how many of you have made jokes about gay people or handicapped people. Those are just as bad as racist actions! If you are against racism and want African-Americans to be treated equally, you have to play your part too!

I support the Treyvon Martin cause and I really hope that this controversy opens some eyes and minds. Peace and love! We need to come together as one race...the human race!
